Jesse Boykins III teamed up with Melo-X and Trae Harris to create this wondrous remix of Andre3000′s song. The arrangement is beautiful.
In his own words: In Honor of Andre 3000 & The Isley Brothers, I decided to finally produce & record the song I’ve been using to start my live set for the past year. It also marks the end of a great summer filled with love & new experiences. Definitely a thank you to all my believers and supporters. Hope you find your Prototype in 2010. Special thanks to MeLo-X & Trae Harris for being on the wave with me.
A single track download (2008 ?) that sounds like proper southern soul meets R Kelly....full of that urban insecurity swagger...... "Kicking it right".... yeah.....
Never mind sampling "Miss You"-thanks to soundclick a few years ago- I got hold of this... He's called ahmsofly and I do like this and always have-in that strange way-because it's terrible and yet hats off to the guy for originality-like a godly Michael Cooper...
Where to begin ? I've always disliked this record-I'm more than prepared to sell my copy-I was even going to give it away- Still for the second night out (at an Event) I've been to it's been played (the first being better than the second). I decided to dance to it again under the delusion-that it may become even more sought after-and I can sell my copy-"big-style"...
..and Dean dear friend does this really fit with Flying Lotus ?
It has a great intro and a piss poor vocal- and I'm about the best thing to ever happen to this track-which fills me with sadness
A pleasant surprise to find this on Bandcamp-a well regarded set from 2007. Several of these tracks have subsequently been remixed by K Murdock amongst others...
He is quite a talent IMHO... and this track in particular is my kind of "alt.mod.soul"
The CD a Mothers Pearl by Galactic Mutherland is worth buying- not that I have it of course.
Soul Brother amongst many others gave it glowing reviews and tracks from the band crop up from time to time in media shows, even today.
I know this particular track because of a friend of mine Stevie Street-who included it in a mini compilation from a rare R&B sampler he had once unearthed amongst dusty shelves. It's the only track out of the six he gave me that I can actually trace down... Oddly enough though I did once find another in the series of samplers-in Oldham Street, Stevie being partly responsible for me returning to Records Shops from time to time- despite the Internet....
Another rediscovered track. A cover version of a quite brilliant as well as being a staple "melodic" Pop song- which would probably be my choice at Karaoke....
(unless they have something from AG's Glow set)...
This interpretation by veteran Jazz singer Cassandra Wilson is simple-understated-with a deep richness of tone......
Can't recall how I came to get this track- I'm guessing EMS for now..... I had completely forgotten about it until this Evening. It is of course nuts- being both good (well the voice is sincere) and quite terrible at the same time-but then again what do I know ?... Somehow though I can almost sense somebody raving on about how great this is....which speaking personally I wouldn't rush to agree with.....
992! I'm sick of you. Furthermore who is this Judas and was he in the O Jays ?
When L.A. based Erik Rico and Marc Mac (4hero) hooked up in the studio this summer, “Direct Soul” was born. The Direct Soul EP was really captured in a moment of time with all 4 tracks recorded in one late afternoon session in Marc’s small Bedfordshire studio. The only guideline was not to let the boundaries of tempo & style limit the creation. Marc’s Afro-Latinic frame fused with Tech-Soul forms the bedding for Erik’s unique vocal style. A real modern day fusion many musical stylese and stretching our perception of SOUL! I have no info yet on a release date, but I think their Bandcamp page is coming very soon.
I'm well known as a huge fan of Soulful House- I'm often found with sweatbands around my legs giving it up big style to the sounds of Ralph Gumm -because dancing sets you free......
No not really
It's odd when I find a folder called raw artistic soul-you got rhythm too and in front of the folder name- I've typed OK.... as if finding any music of this genre is such a surprise... But listening again I think I've found an up tempo track with Ursula on it that I actually quite like...........
" Oh My God- I know this is really really old- but seeing as I HAVE to spend money on tracks-I found it on E Music..it's so great-so feeling.....if only all modern soul was like this...
I've been liking this guy since The Sandwich Shop one of the better mix-tapes of the year. This solo effort has chops-from the 8 bit graphics-through to the couplets...
Yet more of the "digital software let's you bastardise the classics"...
Alexander O'Neal - A Broken Heart Can Mend -is dear to me....it's so well crafted-the song is sentimental and full of hooks and it's brilliantly produced even if I've no idea about the blokes behind it "Jam and Lewis"??? -but they seem quite good
Of course that was then and....
These kids of today ! No respect at all-they may know more than me about Jam and Lewis and Loop software but honestly are these the best samples they can do with my white whale dance track ?...
http://huess.bandcamp.com/album/broke-ep
Then again I do like the Keyboard break in this-It's like Mickey Finn on Acid- And compared to say DJ Housemixer f*cking over this track....it's almost acceptable-
If memory serves I think Bessy posted a link on here to this in the comments a while back... Quite wonderful .....
From Trees for Breakfast blog
Holy sh*t where the hell did THIS come from?” That is exactly what I just exclaimed out loud in my living room after opening up a new email from the Kansas City chief of INnate Sounds crew Miles Bonny. This is an amazing, cool-as-f*ck soul track produced by DJ Day called “Learnin’ To Fly.” Previously an unreleased song from 2008, this will now be appearing on a soon-to-be-released compilation called Lumberjack Soul on one of my favorite overseas labels, Melting Pot Music (straight outta Germany). I defy you to not play this repeatedly w/ the lights dimmed.
I first heard Michael Wycoff's looking up to you while cassette recording Dazz Bennet on Soul Nation. It was already 11 years old. I played that tape often because it's pretty brilliant song. Dazz was probably playing it back then (1993) because Zhane had a hit with Hey Mr DJ which samples the track. I liked "Hey Mr DJ" as well of course back then too. I never did buy the Wycoff LP-nor research it because my tape recording from Dazz seemed good enough.
Track 4 being named Original Wackoff which on it's own is quite amusing.... It's another example of how easy (or not) it is to make beats....
In tribute I found my original encoded recording of Dazz Bennet- opened it in Wavelab- and using the time stretching tools-added a bit to the end... It took about 5 minutes...
The American Idol/Got Talent-franchise has thrown up many names. Currently hot to trot is the sultry toned Lawrence Beamen. Even Mark Jordan has done one on the B Man
Fantasia is old school she had the "Televisual moment" on the show...She has the family pedigree. She hasn't achieved of course but she has had her moments. But in the instant fame world keeping up the momentum isn't easy....
From her latest uneven CD....Still this track has Media Show written all over it... (makes me wonder if it's a cover version-very Motown style)
Mike Stephens is the loose Cannon at the Parkers do..... I could ask him for this and with any luck he'd play it...I doubt they played it at Parkers but Richard did at Sankeys which is good enough (me thinks)... From Mike's show too..if only he read this blog....
When this was released (2008?) it was simply passed over (not passover of course)....
It is very Underdogs on the production (same old Tank) which puts people off....
I like the hinted at back story of Mary Mary being late- mostly because they provide me with the best bit of this song...the phrasing of " and He brought out the very best of me"- is spectacular..mind it helps if you hear it on the mp3.....
If you've been hungry today-if you've even dates after ten long hours... this is for you...
Ray B is without a doubt the most remarkable artist I've ever seen live- and Eddie P- is probably one of the few truly genius keyboard players still alive....Those LP congas- saw me through my teenage years..I played mine at the BOTW with Sad Cafe but hand on heart this is brilliant.....and it's years old
Plus you gotta love Bob Hinsley on the Bass (which is a Joke that is so funny -it's a shame you don't get it)
Imagine a Paprika Soul remake..... But better... this obscure track from not an exactly solid CD from 1999.. does kinda move...in a Freestyling way- love that keyboard work...
Wherever I wander, wherever I roam I couldn't be fonder of my big home The bees are buzzin' in the tree To make some honey just for me When you look under the rocks and plants And take a glance at the fancy ants Then maybe try a few
"I've paid all my overdues-Hope is gone and there is nothing that I can do "
Oh the songs that I once Knew.... Sailed away and they never came back to you... I wonder if the World Outside-would ever hear my cry.. It comes along today in a Tale Of Two Cities
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities English novelist (1812 - 1870)
Kinda like this new to me CD... has something a bit more to it...
I mean a track called Gladys...???? (very Marvin Gaye circa Here my Dear)
A quick search of my reader tells me this has been featured on Soul Sermon, Soul Sorts and Select Soul ....... hats off to them for playing it as it's just a bit different.....
The New Kem CD Kem - Intimacy Album III is making a few noises around the scene- which has as much to do with it's appearance all over the net as a illegal download as to do with the music itself....
Tres Styles.... From his Summer Love mixtape- a straight ahead "Boy no longer Meets Girl" Song which has a bit of Wit and Charm and a lot of Pop about it...love that rough as toast sound......
Nobody does it quite like Joe- from his recent DVD live in Japan which Mark Merry featured in his pod casts but didn't send me a copy...but hey it's Joe-so I reckon he knew I'd get it soon enough....
I've see Joe live three times and though the last time I felt a bit cheated (it was a PA)- He still remains one of the most enigmatic performers I know....
One of my fave tracks of all times comes from the Last Poets. From the Delights of the Garden LP side 2 consists of three tracks Be-Yon-Der.... The song is a parable cum Sc -Fi story...
Set in the future the master race (known as the Jin) have developed technology to infinite levels-and in doing so have subjugated the masses-and become evil. God has watched, grown angry, and dispatched the Angel of Death-to cleanse the world. The Jin go into hiding deep underground but some of their number have decided to escape and face death. The Jin though have a secret Weapon an Android-of such power and destructive nature they keep it de activated until of course the Angel of Death threatens to come underground. So they release the Android Samatiken to the surface.
On meeting the Angel of Death the Android asks who he serves-and in a chilling and very telling reply is told....
Know all tool of fools-There is no Lord but one He be gets nor is he begotten. He creates and destroys at his whim-and there is none like unto him. He to all souls reckon-He to all submit upon his beckon. The Lord of the darkness the Lord of the Light. The Lord of the Day and the Lord of the Night The Lord of the Two East's and the Two West's Who not declares any slumber or needs any rest HE ALONE sits upon the throne and to HIM ALONE is all things known For he has created all things And HE ALONE is the King of Kings When he creates a thing he merely says BE ! There is no other Lord but HE-who knows what you was before you were what you are....
I nabbed this from My Space then lost it in a hard drive crash-luckily for me I'd uploaded it and E mailed a link to a famous German website... So later I was able to download it from there....
Since the dawn of My Space people have been recording the music tracks uploaded through the embedded player-or any such embedded player which features full length tracks-such as Singers Room. Recording "what you hear" is easy enough for people with a Sound blaster type audio card. For me though- who has a much better audio card- it's almost impossible. Course there are ways round it (computer wise) but My Space and others have become wise to these "back door" abuses. ..I still manage it though........... (he says winking)
The highlight for me regarding this "recording style"- has to be Richard Searling- at Prestwich playing a rough "recorded player" version of "I adore You"-which later was released....(on one of his compilations)
Figure 8 by Malik though never got released (or featured on expansions)...thankfully I was able to grab this rather good version-shortly after Mike Stephens played it on Solar back in the day... It's a dance floor classic...never let it be forgotten. Mike City on the production....(sigh)
Excellent example of a re worked Modern Soul Classic sample rapified from 2009. A good friend and supporter Lasse B's Fave rapper at work here-I'll let him tell you who is it in the comments.... The difference between this and Wiz (posted below) is in the lyrics which are altogether tighter-more astute -and clever....When matched with the generous use of the sample they give it a little bit more
From the same mixtape as Up (see other post)..... Pot smoking bad boy takes a sample and spews his usual "nasty" stuff.... It's like he's a cool dude who has been many times to the King Georges Hall in Blackburn... no Kush there though...(it's always amusing when you find a modern soul classic sample in Rap)
So I was on one of my old haunts the other day-the East Asian Forum known as Needpop...
Things hadn't changed much -still all sorts of music using strange methods of downloading such as Rayfile and strange file hosters which can't be understood despite Google Translate....
I did grab what I assume is a compliation and it's pretty decent on first few listens..zero info on the tagging though...
Quite like this track but I'm clueless as to who it is...I've shown the back of the Cd cover and yes it's a good blog-an old fave in fact-so it's hardly surprising I like the compilation
